His character is coming to terms with modern life after being frozen for nearly 70 years.
But Chris Evans’ Captain America is given the old fashioned task of taking on a motley crew of pirates in a newly released clip from the forthcoming sequel The Winter Soldier.
Taking part in a covert S.H.I.E.L.D mission to save the captured mobile satellite launch platform the Lemurian Star, he is joined by a team of crack commandos and Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow.
But while they are taking on a crucial defence mission, the Avengers seem more intent on making small talk about the Captain’s love life than thinking about the task at hand.
As he is getting ready to deploy, she asks him: ‘You do anything fun Saturday night?’
He replies: ‘Well all the guys from my barbershop quartet are dead, so, no not really.
Scarlett riposts: ‘You know if you ask Kristen out from statistics, she’d probably say yes.’
But after informing his nosy friend he is ‘too busy’ to worry about romance, he leaps from their aircraft to the ocean below before making his way on board.
After a brief action sequence in which the super soldier mops up the crew on deck, he is saved from possible death by a sniper after a pirate holds a gun to his back.
With the team now on board, Black Widow uses it as an opportunity to continue aggressive line of questioning, saying: ‘What about the nurse that lives across the hall from you? She seems kind of nice.’
Keen to get rid of her for a while, the exasperated superhero replies: ‘Secure the engine room then find me a date.’
Scarlett, who has just announced she is pregnant in real life, then shows off a series of nifty martial arts moves when she gets below deck, with arm bars, high kicks and flips all part of her repertoire, and leading to her soon succeeding in her mission.
A montage is then shown of other events from the film, with the fearsome look Winter Soldier of the film’s title launching what seems like an all out war on S.H.I.E.L.D, with Samuel L Jackson’s Nick Fury seeming to pay the price.
It seems the Steve Rogers could be the only person to stand in his way, Robert Redford’s Alexander Pierce, a senior leader within S.H.I.E.L.D, telling him: ‘: ‘Society’s at a tipping point between order and chaos. Captain are you ready?’
However it is not as simple as it seems, and he is embroiled in a web of intrigue that struggles to expose the ever-widening conspiracy while fighting off assailants sent to silence him at every turn.
And it seems the good-natured, but simple minded, hero is struggling, as he says: ‘Longest time I just wanted to do what was right. I not quite sure what that means anymore.’
The movie, which also stars Emily VanCamp, Cobie Smulders, Frank Grillo and Hayley Atwell, is due to be released on April 4.
